This year’s A level results day has been about recognising and celebrating the achievements of all our young people. This extends beyond our own school; I would like to acknowledge the effort, hard work and resilience shown by all students across our Trust (WeST) – along with all the schools and colleges within Plymouth – and congratulate them on what should be a proud day for students and their families.

 

The results that the students have achieved this year are even more commendable when we reflect that this cohort of individuals have suffered more educational disruption than any other cohort in recent history. They have demonstrated the ability to adapt to prolonged periods of time away from their school community and their daily routines, as well as the opportunity to fully engage with their teachers, support staff and peers. Despite these challenges, they have responded to new and alternative approaches to teaching and learning and shown great courage, commitment and resilience which has led them to the success that we are witnessing today.

 

Alan Yendell, Headteacher of Plymstock School shared: ‘I am incredibly proud of every single student who has received their exam results today. The individuals in this year’s cohort are wonderful young people, who have navigated their way through a difficult and challenging period within their education and have only ever experienced sitting formal examinations this summer. These young people now have the opportunity to harness their experiences, resilience and ability to overcome challenges to great effect as they move forwards to the next stage of their education or career. I wish every single student the very best as they continue to pursue their personal and career aspirations.’

 

Today also provides an opportunity to pause and acknowledge and celebrate the work that schools, teachers and support staff have undertaken. They have not only worked tirelessly to ensure our children and young people continued to access their education but were also supported with their wellbeing, concerns, and worries. All schools should take the opportunity to congratulate themselves and be proud of what they have achieved.

 

Liz Monelle, Head of Post 16 at Plymstock School shared: ‘On behalf of all the staff who have worked with the incredible group of students gaining their results this morning, we would like to say a huge – Well Done! Sixth form studies are a high level of challenge for any student to undertake, but this year’s students have had further obstacles and challenges to face due to the disruptions in their learning over the past two years. Despite this have remained resilient and focused to achieve the fantastic set of results that they have today. These results are now a stepping stone for our young people to move onto their desired next steps in their learning journey which include a number of students gaining University, apprenticeship and employment opportunities across a wide number of sectors and around the country. There are many individual success stories which show the determination and commitment of certain students in overcoming individual barriers to gain success. We have students off to study at a number of prestigious further education establishments such as Oxford, Bristol, Cardiff and Manchester to study in areas such as health care, teaching, law, business to name but a few. A number of students have managed to compete against large numbers of applicants to obtain higher level apprenticeships with local and national employers. We are confident all students will now have the skills required to continue to be successful in their chosen pathways. Finally, we are incredibly proud of all our students and look forward to hearing of their future successes.’

 

Students will now move onto the next stage of their future plans, with many securing their first choice offers to University. Others will be taking up traineeships, apprenticeships and employment opportunities.
